Community Updates from Dr. Bob: 09/20/2023
This past Monday night, we had our first Discipleship Lab! Forty people joined us and we put into practice what we heard in Sunday’s sermon on prayer. We spent time practicing listening prayer—not in a forced way, but spending relaxed time in the presence of God, open and listening for his voice.
One man commented on how when he was with his grandchildren, he would simply delight in their presence, listening to what they had to say and enjoying his time with them. He noted that it’s the same way with God in prayer. God simply enjoys our presence and our engagement even when it looks like nothing in particular is going on.
We also had a table of middle and high school students, and I found it so encouraging to see them engaging with God and engaging with the discussion with such sincerity and curiosity. This is truly the vision of a multi-generational church we want to be a part of.
The Discipleship Lab is where we are putting our energy as a church right now—into living out what we hear Jesus saying to us and getting serious about how we follow him in real life. To be not just hearers of the word, but doers (James 1:22). It’s not too late to start coming if that sounds like something you want to be a part of. Bring the kids and join us on Monday nights. There’s something for all ages—all focused on living out our discipleship with Jesus in real time and in real ways—in the context of supportive community.
In addition to our groups and discussions on Monday nights, the Discipleship Lab also includes a midweek resource to reinforce and deepen our walk with Jesus. The “Field Guide” is a daily companion for spiritual formation, helping us walk like Jesus and join Him on His mission. Nothing could be more valuable for us as a church right now – to connect deeply with Jesus, to walk in the rhythms of His grace, and to partner with Him to bless our church and community. These are the seeds of revival. Check out this week’s Field Guide here. It’s not too late to join us.
Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6
