Community News from Dr. Bob – 03/6/24
As I’ve listened to sermons by Pastor Brett, this last Sunday included, I’ve come away with some very clear points he is repeatedly making. Here are some of them:
- The Mission of Jesus = engaging with new and non-Christian people
- Who is responsible for this mission? Individual followers of Jesus
- The old methods of inviting people to events and church programs aren’t working anymore.
- Therefore, we (as individuals) need to make shifts in how we relate to non-believers.
- These shifts–and whether we as individuals make them–are the determining factor for the future of our church.
- We need to be not hearers of the Word, but doers of the Word.
- Are you–on a personal and individual level–willing to make needed changes in your life to engage personally with unbelievers?
There’s a powerful podcast Pastor Brett and I recently listened to–and have sent on to members of the Board–that really lays these concepts out in stark but helpful terms. I wholeheartedly recommend that each of you listen to it as well. For it is not just with the leadership that these most important changes are made, but with the people… and with their actions, not just their words.
Here’s a link to that podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuQb58jedxQ I recommend taking a walk around your neighborhood while listening (or immediately afterward).
If you are willing, here are a few easy steps you can take in the right direction:
- Rearrange your schedule to include time with those who are not part of the church.
- Take up a new hobby or interest that can help you make new friends who are not yet followers of Jesus.
- Even simply talking to people before and after the church service that you don’t already know can be a baby step.
But if you are serious about the mission of Jesus, do something.
Praying for you…
