Home – By Pastor Kathy Zour

Our home is very important to me, I love to be in my home, I love to entertain in my home, I love a household of teenagers hanging out and I love the peace and quiet of my Thursdays off.  My home is a sacred place to me and I spend a lot of time making my home have a comfy and cozy feel. I am happiest when my home is clean and when my husband and sons are home with me.

As much as I value cozy, clean and comfortable there is something I value more about my home and has become a priority in my home and my decorating.  We do not have a perfect home or a perfect family but we are a Joshua 24:5 home.  “As for me and my household we will serve the Lord.”  We are a family that loves God and our strongest desire as parents is that our boys have a strong faith that will last their lifetime when they leave our home.

As much as I believe in  family devotions, prayer time and blessing your children I also believe that we can speak faith into our kids without having to say a word.  Our kids need to know they are loved, they are valued and that God has a plan for them.  When Jacob (now 18) and Ryan (16) were babies we had scriptures painted on their walls above their cribs.  We would use these scriptures to pray over them and bless them before bed each night.  As they got older I would print out scriptures and make posters to hang in their rooms so they could read them every day and know that God loves them.

This type of decorating has evolved into other areas of our home where my kids and their friends hang out in.  Brett and I want to be intentional in passing faith down to our boys, their friends, neighbor kids, nieces, nephews and one day grandchildren.  So part of the way I decorate our house is letting our faith shine through the way I decorate.  My collection of crosses is a gentle reminder of the price Jesus paid for us.  My gallery wall of photos has words of faith and inspiration throughout it.  The gallery wall is strategically placed behind the tv in our teen room.  So while video games are being played, movies are being watched, kids are hanging out they can read the words from Proverbs about Trusting in God with all their heart.  Or they can be reminded in 1 Corinthians how love bears all things. As a parent I want my kids to know this and to read this a 100 times!
crossesGod gives us some good instruction on passing down faith to the next generation in Deuteronomy 6: 7 “Impress them on your children. Talk about them (faith) when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”  God always wants us talking about faith and it doesn’t have to be a formal family devotion.  It can be  a conversation in the car about God’s promises when you see a rainbow.  It can be a prayer for someone in need  when you hear a siren, it can be a blessing before you drop your kids off at school or tuck them in at night. Or it can be a verse on your wall, a cross hung in the hallway or anything that speaks God’s truth into your family and friends as they spend time with you in your home.

There are so many ways to be creative in sharing our faith and inspiring this next generation to Know and Love Jesus.  I would love to hear what you and your family do.

Blessings, Kathy Zour
