Advent is a season of waiting, hoping, and wondering. Just as the people of faith didn’t know when or how to expect the Messiah coming to them, so we today don’t yet know what God will be doing or how. What do we know? We know he is at work. We know he is bringing his Kingdom to earth. We know he is calling us to show his light to the world around us. But we don’t yet see all that he will do or what that will look like.

As we wait, let us seek as the shepherds sought:

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”  Luke 2:8-12

What was their response to this announcement? Let’s go see! And immediately they went, sought, looked, and wondered at what God was doing.

What is God doing among us today, now, through our lives, and in the lives of those around us? To what degree are we looking? To what degree are we expectant that he will be at work? Are we listening to his voice? Are we willing to go see what he is telling us? Are we willing to join in with his work?

As we engage all the celebrations and traditions of Christmas, let’s not lose sight of Jesus during all of it. Advent is a season of reflection, making sure our hearts are right and ready before God so we do not miss what he is doing.
